Family-based treatment (FBT) is the only evidence based treatment for adolescents with eating disorders. This original "Maudsley" approach was developed and manualized for research purposes, and did not utilize a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) in the model. Dietitians are uniquely trained to provide case consultation to treatment providers, support and coaching to parents and should utilize resources and know how to make referrals to other FBT providers. RDN's working with adolescents in any outpatient nutritional counseling setting should be educated with the "Practical Approach" of FBT. This interactive workshop will provide background information to the novice RDN as well as the nuts and bolts of the“Practical Approach” of FBT. Training includes the EDGE assessment form and Parent Tool Box and RD tools for assessment, education and collaboration developed by Melanie Jacob, RD CSSD.
